Monaco small update

Post by Pavel »

Hi all!
With permission from Stefano Zampedri I want to share with you my small update to Monaco track that uses objects and textures from old unreleased work by Stefano. Not all goodies were used, they maybe included in future updates. But I hope you will enjoy current release too! :) Also I tried to fix as many track glitches as I can. At least after Tabac corner cars in front don't disappear behind walls.

Installation:
Please make backup of your original Manaco folder (rename it to something like 'Monaco backup') in case you will not like this update.
Update comes as full track folder just for easier installation. Create new Monaco folder and extract contain of this archive into it. If you are using some specefic AI files you can copy them from backup folder.
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... drive_link (monaco_r3_20240404.zip archive)

Some notes and available options:
1) Horizon and sky
By default update comes with original horizon 3do file by Papyrus but with textures from Rocks 2 update. I prefer that clear blue sky and blue sea than Rocks 2 version. Also original horizon 3do better mask some holes in the track. If you prefer horizon from Rocks 2 update then in 'options/horizon rocks 2' folder you can find needed files. Just copy them into main track folder. Also option sky textures are presented too.

2) Armco wall at Casino corner.
By default track comes with invisible armco at Casino corner. So there is invisible wall there. But I have placed darker and brighter asphalt textures there to better see track edge. If you want to have armco wall back there then you can copy armco_c.mip file from 'options/armco casino' folder into main track folder.

3) Armco wall at Tabac corner.
By default track comes with armco wall on the right at Tabac corner. On real track there was only short armco section protecting stairs. I never liked invisible wall there that was in Rocks 2 update so make it visible for this update. But if you prefer not to see armco wall there then you can copy armco_t.mip file from 'options/no armco tabac' folder into main track folder.

4) 1955 Monaco track addon will not work with this update, I think.

BTW I haven't changed camera files. Because I hope I was able to reduce number of graphical glitches around the track then some camera views can use less zoom now. I will be glad if someone may work on better camera views.

Thank you sooooo much for your amazing efforts... your among the GPL Legends....

(One small issue, when I drop in the armco t mip it results in a black bar where the armco used to be at tabac .. I modified the mip to be transparent in WinMip and it corrected the issue... looks much nicer without armco agreed))

I finally had a chance to try this! The environs around the S/F area and hairpin are so much better than before! It's also a refreshing change to see the Casino bend without the armco.

Yeah, especially I like refresh look of S/F srea. It was so emty and lifeless before.
As I mentioned before there are still some details that I can add to the track like ships and boats in harbour. But I want to wait and see if there will be any reports of bad FPS. Because all this objects are hight deteiled so I afraid peope will have problem running races with full grid.

Yes, it's much more lively than before! Really good job mate. I hope FPS will not be a barrier to improving the track further in 2024.

A few things to share from my side:

1. I previously tried to make a 3DO of the chicane entry/exit wall based on the 3DO used at the final hairpin. I have made some basic textures for it as well (attached to the bottom of this post) but it's not great... Is it useful in any way?
2. The haybales after the chicane are now plain - is it possible to restore the hayba_s.mip?
3. Is it possible to move the trees on the entry of the chicane to the correct side of the wall (the track side) without clipping? (I tried, but...clipping :rockedover: )
4. What do you think about using this as the basis for a new Monacane, with a better looking chicane?

Finally for those who are interested, here's how it looks. A great improvement IMO!:
